Social media has indeed opened a new level for feminism. Encouraging solidarity, sisterhood and emphasizes shared experiences among women on social media.
With the advent of feminism on social media, women are becoming aware of their rights and working to ensure that they are not denied of their rights.
There has been a lot of movements by women and men ensuring that every woman in equal not just in domestic areas but also in their work force.
I have written this article to show how social media has been able to amplify feminism for women in Nigeria and how progressive the walk has been
Social media has become a platform for community building
Social media platforms like Facebook and twitter has given a lot of women not just in Nigeria but across the globe to reach out to other like-minded women.
With help of social media platforms women who do not have voices in their various cultures come together to form a community on social media where they are given the chance to air their minds and feelings.
Most of the times on this platforms women are given the chance to come out and speak their truths irrespective of her age, educational background or her culture.
A good example of a women community on social media is Females in Nigeria (FIN). An enclosed Facebook group of Nigerian women at home and in diaspora where women support each other without being judgmental.
Social media has helped empower women as leaders
Social media is space where information and ideas are passed on with speed. For this social media works effectively for the feminism walk in Nigeria.
With how fast information and knowledge is passed with social media and how much women are on social media.
Women are empowered through existing social media communities. For instance there are some feminism organizations who work solely on ensuring that women are given the chance of leadership whether in politics, organizations or other spheres of life.
Also, they are empowered through their personal social media networks. Just by sharing their thoughts and having a voice people tend to listen to them on social networks.
The thing is since the rise of feminism in Nigeria, a lot of women have participated online by using the power of social media to make a difference and to lead.
The rise of feminism have allowed the Nigerian modern woman to utilize social media in order to make their voices heard in a society that looks at them crazy for wanting to be leaders.
Women take advantage of social media to show her knowledge and capabilities, which are eventually accessible by anyone thereby making it easier to her to lead.
With the spread of feminism through social media even men are accepting that a woman can become a leader as long as she has the capabilities, the strength and she is competent enough to lead.
A number of Nigerian women have capitalized on social media to achieve their dreams of leadership in Nigeria.
Social media has helped women thrive in businesses
Before the 21st century, women it was believed that women are naturally endued with the capacity of doing domestic duties and material roles while men were to be the ones working and being the bread winners.
With the advent and rise of social media, Nigerian women are able to take advantage of platforms to startup businesses and grow them.
Due to the reduction of gender inequality in Nigeria, a lot of women are beginning to identify their capabilities of running successful businesses. they are also able to take care of their families.
According to Granger “Whatever your brand is—whether your brand is you or your business—you have to present that brand in the best way possible online and off. You want all of your branding to be consistent and authentic”.
Social media has provided a great opportunity for women who want to show their expertise. women are able to do so with social media where a large number of people can see them and patronize their business.
Not just because it is a woman owned business but because the product or service solves problems their buyers.
Social media has provided a forum for meaningful topics to be discussed among women
Networking platforms like twitter and Facebook are some of the useful tools people use to rally support for important causes and engage with the public about a topic interest.
Social media activism are great ways for the Nigerian women to reach a wider audience quickly when working towards achieving a common goal. Already notable achievements have been made with social media.
The world is beginning to see how women can raise their voices online to using social media platforms to tackle important issues. By using social media, people get to share and comment on such issues until it eventually gets to the right people who then works for actions to be taken.
There are cases where women have been able to raise awareness about issues and use social media to raise awareness on certain women rights.
For example women are being educated on social media to speak up when they are molested as it is a crime even though there is no legal punishment for such act in Nigeria.
Social media has improved girls’ access to formal education
Access to education has posed to be an issue that disproportionately stop girls from living the kind of lives they want when they grow up as adults.
Education may not be the only tool for female empowerment but it is a way of escaping poverty. For a long time women have been deprived educationally.
However, the advent of social media coupled with women fighting for girl child education.
There has been a rise in public awareness which has made it much easier to support and take actions to support and take reasonable action on behalf of girls’ education in Nigeria.
There has been a lot of campaigns to educate women and girls not just in Nigeria but across the globe.
You will find out that the level of awareness about this topic has grown higher than it was 10 years ago.
A lot of organizations who are advocates of the girl child education have tried to get funding through social media to send a number of girls to school every year.
Social media has provided young women with more career options
The advent of digital media has created waves for new career opportunities for a lot of individuals and stay at home mothers. Because we learn, interact and do business online, studying computer related courses is relatively common in schools more than it was a few years ago.
Girls who are taught to interact with technology at a tender age most of the times grow up with solid foundations from which they are able to go into a STEM related career unlike before when STEM related careers are meant only for the male counterparts.
Today it is a norm to see women who are thriving in STEM related career paths. This is a result of digital media with social media playing a huge role on Nigerian women to excel in whatever career path they chose.
Even though women are still marginalized in some spheres of life, they have also become significant in the society.
Social as a tool for communication and information dissemination has played a great role to ensure that feminism is amplified in Nigeria and among Nigerians.
